The Simple Website Placement That Increases Calls: Your Phone Number

Let me ask you a quick question:

When someone lands on your website and wants to call you, how many seconds does it take for them to find your number?

If the answer is more than three, we’ve got a problem.

Because today’s website visitors—especially those on mobile—won’t dig around for your contact info. They’ll bounce and call the next business that makes it easy.

Here’s the good news:

Placing your phone number in the right spot on your website is one of the fastest ways to get more calls—without touching your SEO, ads, or content.

And most small business owners get it wrong.

In this blog, I’ll show you:

  • Why phone number placement is a conversion factor (not just a design choice)

  • Where it should go on your site for best results

  • What we do inside our Performance Marketing Program to fix this fast

  • And how to make it easier than ever for people to call you—especially from mobile

Why Phone Number Placement Matters for SEO and Conversions

When someone visits your site, especially if they found you through Google or a “near me” search (see this blog), they’re looking to:

  • Know if you’re legit
  • See if you serve their area
  • Take action—often by calling

On mobile, the fastest path to conversion is a phone call.
On desktop, a prominently placed number builds trust instantly—even if they plan to email or use a form.

But if your number is:

  • Hidden in the footer

  • Buried in the “Contact Us” page

  • Not click-to-call on mobile

  • In a hard-to-read font or color…

You’re leaking leads.

70% of mobile searchers have used the “click to call” feature directly from Google results (Google).

And if that number doesn’t match what’s on your website? Trust takes a hit.

Where Your Phone Number Should Go

This is what we implement on every site we build inside the MSW Performance Marketing Program—because it works.

1. Top Right Corner of Your Website (Every Page)

This is the most expected, trusted place to find a phone number. For both desktop and mobile users, it’s where the eye goes first.

Pro Tip: Make it a button or link that says “📞 Call Now” or “Talk to a Real Person”—and make it click-to-call on mobile.

2. Your Site’s Header (Sticky if Possible)

If your site has a sticky or fixed header (meaning it stays visible as you scroll), that’s a great place to keep your number in sight at all times.

3. Above the Fold on Your Homepage

Your homepage should have a call-to-action section with your number front and center—especially if “call us” is your primary CTA.

Example:
“Questions? Call us now at (573) 552-8403 — we’re here to help.”

4. In the Footer (Every Page)

Reinforce the phone number again in your footer. If someone scrolls all the way down, don’t make them scroll back up.

Consistency is key.

5. On Your Contact Page—With Context

Yes, include it here, too. But don’t just paste the number. Tell them why to call.

Example:
“Need a quote? Have a question? Our team is just a phone call away—no pressure, no sales pitch. Just real help.”

Real Client Example: The “Invisible” Phone Number Fix

A service-based business in Missouri came to us frustrated. They were getting good traffic and had strong rankings—but leads were low.

Here’s what we found:

  • Their phone number was only on their contact page

  • It wasn’t click-to-call on mobile

  • It wasn’t included on their top-performing blog posts

  • It didn’t stand out visually

We updated their homepage, added a click-to-call button in the header, and reinforced it on their blog and footer.

Result? A 61% increase in calls from mobile users over the next 45 days—with zero changes to their traffic or ad spend.

What Else to Consider with Your Phone Number

Let’s go beyond placement and make sure you’re fully optimized for calls.

Make It Click-to-Call

On mobile, your phone number should be:

  • Tappable

  • Formatted with dashes (e.g., 573-552-8403)

  • Wrapped in a link that starts with tel: (your web team will know what this means)

Add Your Hours

Next to your number—or in the same section—include your hours of availability. People are more likely to call if they know they’re not wasting their time.

Offer a Call-to-Action

Don’t assume people will just call. Invite them to:

  • “Schedule your free quote”

  • “Ask a quick question”

  • “Book a strategy call”

Match It to Your Google Business Profile

Make sure the number on your website is identical to the one listed on your Google Business Profile and across all other directories (see this blog on NAP consistency).

What We Do at MSW (So You Never Miss a Call)

When we design or optimize websites inside our Performance Marketing Program, we:

  • Place your phone number in all high-impact locations
  • Make it mobile-friendly and click-to-call
  • Add it to high-traffic pages (not just your homepage)
  • Ensure it matches your listings across the web
  • Test placement and visibility across devices
  • Review call data monthly to see what’s working

And if calls are a key goal for your business, we make it a core part of your lead generation system.

Small Tweaks, Big Results: Try This Today

If you want to improve your call conversion rate right now, do this:

  1. Visit your site on your phone.

  2. Can you find your number in 3 seconds?

  3. Tap it—does it dial automatically?

  4. Is it clearly visible on every page?

  5. Does it appear near the top of the screen?

If you answered “no” to any of those, we can help.

Final Thoughts: Don’t Make People Work to Call You

People are busy. They're distracted. If you make them hunt for your contact info, many won’t bother.

But when your phone number is clearly placed, easy to tap, and reinforced with a simple CTA?

That’s when clicks turn into conversations—and conversations turn into clients.

Sometimes the fix isn’t about more traffic. It’s about making the most of the visitors you already have.
